Source : Yahoo AnswersQuestion : How can I convert theists to Atheism?

I have always wanted to convince my theist friends that they are living a lie and that there is no logical nor scientific evidence backing their beliefs. However, they always shut me off. What convincing book, articles, video or any sort of informative media can you recommend me in order to help them move on?

Please take this question seriously.

Answer by Eric
Considering you can’t disprove their God because you can’t disprove something that doesn’t exist, really you can’t convert them. I’m waiting for aliens to come honestly.

Answer by Anon
take some dust, put it in a test tube, shake it about and turn it upside down. When a man falls out, I’m yours.

Answer by XY GTHO
Make sure you tell them about Christians causing the “Dark Ages”. That gets a lot of thumbs up around here.

Answer by Rabbi Schlomo Schlomberg
Lobotomy should help

Answer by Great Gazoo
No one thing ever does it. You just have to get them to think about it.

Frankly, using the Bible and the strange things it says is the most effective way to do that. Very few Christians actually read it.

Answer by Graham
There are many lies you can try to use.

Keep an open mind, and try and find out for yourself – that is the best possible use of your time.

Answer by Guardian Angel Mitchell
Maybe instead of converting them, you should present them with your beliefs and they can choose whether or not to believe like you.

Answer by naye
Well it seems like the problem with theists vs atheist is that each side believes the same thing about each other. Both parties feel as if the other is wrong. Regardless of what i believe( Im christian) you cannot convert nor change anyone. Change takes place in a person’s heart, and works its way from the inside out.

Answer by Seirra
It shouldn’t matter because those are their personal beliefs.

Answer by Tamara
Why do you need to convert anybody? I find the theists trying to convert me the biggest annoyance; I certainly don’t want to perpetuate it. I hate proselytizing!

On the other hand, if they enjoy debating, and some of them do, then why not? There’s a number of interesting books out by atheists. “Letter to a Christian Nation” by Sam Harris is a good one.

Many of us become unbelievers just by reading the Bible! It’s full of contradictions, and God acting like a monster.

It is almost impossible to convert people who aren’t already wanting conversion. And I don’t recommend you try with your friends, as it is annoying to have somebody preaching at you. They are shutting you off because they don’t really want to hear it. After all this is one of most atheists’ biggest complaints about religious people, that they are always trying to force their beliefs upon others.

Answer by Micky GG
Just show them this:

C S Lewis expands on the idea and shows why the non Christian really has no logical alternative but to accept that Jesus is God:

“I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic-on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg-or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse.

You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. “

Is this good for you or for your friends?

Answer by Carl Pierce
Getting them to read the bible page by page is a good start on the road to atheism.

Otherwise if they are intelligent direct them to an website like rationalskeptic where all the arguments are debunked and explored.

Answer by
The lie is that logic does not exist on both sides, and both sides take faith in one form or another as well. Convert? The real question is what do you have to gain by doing this? Live and let live. You are entitled to your personal beliefs as is everyone else.

They most likely, like I do, view your position the same way you view theirs. Scientific method cannot discern between a universe created by God and one created by chance. It’s illogical to assume otherwise.

And the “Dark Ages” was caused by the Roman Catholic church under the rule of Constantine. It was not Christian at all.

Answer by Professor Schaftenberg
try this.
ask them to read the entire bible old and new.
ask them to pick out all the bits that are not read out in the church.
and there is plenty of stuff swept under the carpet, believe me.
ask them to explain,in their own words, why it seems logical to them.
rape, genocide, incest and talking animals.its all there.
just not spoke about at christian parties.
i wonder why
